Everyone has an artist within them. Some have already found their talent, but not everyone has had the opportunity or the resources to be able to do so. Art education is essential for students because creation is focused on discovery, not looking for the correct answer. This creation process can include trying different styles of art, and different mediums, and focusing on different subject matters. All renowned artists have their defining style, but they were not always great artists.
Students have the chance to open up new doors by being given a dedicated safe space to explore many different art forms. This can vary between artistic styles, artistic mediums, and the subject matters in which they will be taught. Within my art class, students can figure out what style of art speaks to them. Students will also get the chance to pick their favorite medium, as well as test out others. When their medium and style are established, the next step in their artistic journey is to find what subject matters interest them and if their artwork will speak on these matters. When all of these factors come together, they help to shape the development of a student's artistic voice.
Everyone is an artist. And everyone deserves the opportunity to find out what kind of artist they are. Within my art classroom, students will be guaranteed a safe space to express themselves, discover who they are as artists, and practice communication within their art so that one day they too might inspire others to find out what kind of artist they might be.
